Bar and Bat Mitzvah
How does someone become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah? It is actually pretty easy. A boy simply needs to turn 13 and a girl 12. However, if you want to lead a Bar or Bat Mitzvah service, Mickve Israel is the place to do it. We host ceremonies for our congregants, and we rent out our sanctuary for destination Ceremonies as well. Please give us a call if you are interested in a destination event.
For those of you fortunate enough to live in the beautiful city of Savannah or the surrounding areas, Cantor Rachel and Rabbi Haas, along with tutors, help to train our students so that they will not only read from the Torah scroll during the service but actually lead the entire service as well.
After attending Shalom School and studying Hebrew (either at Shalom School or through our private tutoring program) students are invited to train with Canto Rachel and Rabbi Haas. After learning all the prayers for the service, they will learn their Torah and Haftarah portions to chant or read during the service. They will also write a speech based on the Torah portion, complete a Mitzvah Project (Volunteer Project), and agree to donate a percentage of the monies received as gifts to worthy causes (Tzedakah Project).
Leading a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Service is a time-honored tradition, and we are so thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity. We ensure though that the process is not only a little bit of work but a whole lot of fun.
If you are interested in having a Bar or Bat Mitzvah for your son or daughter, please contact Rabbi Haas or Cantor Rachel.
